As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The East Taupō TMA is in the Waikato region, south of the Napier-Taupō Road (State Highway 5), on the north-eastern edge of Lake Taupō. It extends south down the shores of Lake Taupō, from Taupō township to the Hatepe village. The farmland of Taharua area is the eastern boundary, and the northern boundary extends to Iwitahi on State Highway 5.
Most of the habitat is commercial pine forest.
The East Taupō TMA has a long history of TB infection in wildlife. We’ve found many TB-infected pigs and a TB-infected ferret over the years.
We've been doing regular possum control operations in the area since the early 2000s.
