As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Wanaka Hawea TMA covers over 23,800 hectares. It is situated between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. The habitat is extensive, rough and high. The vegetation ranges from scrub to extensive native beech stands. There are vast patches of improved pastures that are heavily farmed.
The Wanaka Hawea TMA has a long history of TB infection in cattle herds and wildlife, dating from the 1980s. Possum control over the past 20 years has decreased the number of infected herds.
