Tagging your animals

Tagging all farmed cattle and deer is essential to tracing them throughout their lives. Find out how to buy and read tags, and what to do if they're lost or damaged.

Animals exempt from tagging

Some animals don't need a NAIT tag, but you may have to get an exemption before you can move them off your farm.

Registering animals in NAIT

After you tag your animals, the next step to ensure they can be traced throughout their lifetime is to register them in your NAIT account.

Declaring other farm animals in NAIT

If you farm cattle or deer, and have other animals on your farm that may contract and spread diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), you need to declare them in NAIT.
