If you want access to data held in the NAIT system, you can make a request to us for it.
We can only give you access to the data you need if it's for one of the purposes set out in section 40 of the NAIT Act 2012. We make decisions about releasing data in accordance with sections 40 to 48 of the NAIT Act. These sections set out strict criteria for releasing personal information.
When we receive a request for data, our NAIT information system administrator assesses it to see if it meets the criteria set out in the NAIT Act. In some cases, we'll also get our NAIT Data Panel to assess requests. The members of the panel have specialist experience and knowledge of both the livestock industry and privacy law.
If you disagree with a decision made by the NAIT administrator or the NAIT Data Panel, you can lodge a complaint with us.
Ensure that what you are requesting is NAIT data. NAIT data comes from the NAIT information system, which holds information that People in Charge of Animals (PICAs) are legally required to provide us with. This includes:
It doesn't include:
If you are a PICA, you can access your own NAIT data through the NAIT information system. This can be done through viewing the details of your animal registrations and movements or running reports within the NAIT information system.
For information requests not related to NAIT data, contact our Support Centre.
Users supply the information in the NAIT information system, so it may include inaccuracies. For example, the system may not always reflect the current record of stock tallies on a person's property.
You may be able to demand NAIT data through legal means, such as a court order, rather than under the NAIT Act. If using legal power to demand information, state this in your data access request form, and provide supporting evidence for this power.
The Official Information Act 1982 doesn't apply to data in the NAIT information system, so you can't request NAIT data under the Act.
To request NAIT data from us, complete a data access request form and:
It usually costs $150 to make a request for NAIT data.
We publish details of any significant NAIT data requests in our annual report each year. This ensures we meet our requirements under Regulation 8 of the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Information System Access Panel) Regulations 2012.
