Importing livestock

An import facility must be registered in the NAIT system as a NAIT location and will be issued a NAIT number. The Person in Charge of Animals (PICA) at the import facility must tag and register all animals received at the facility. When registering the animals, you'll need the:

• import date
• country of origin.

If you're sending animals from an import facility, you must record a sending movement in the NAIT online system.

Exporting livestock

Quarantine and exporting facilities must be registered in the NAIT system as a NAIT location and will be issued a NAIT number. Movements to a quarantine block or export facility should be recorded in the same way as a movement to another farm.

In the case of a live export, farmers don't need to make an animal exit declaration (required usually on death, loss or export) at the farm or transitional facility.

A transitional facility is:

• any place approved as a transitional facility in accordance with section 39 of the Biosecurity Act 1993 for the purpose of inspection, storage, treatment, quarantine, holding, or destruction of uncleared goods, or
• a part of a port declared to be a transitional facility in accordance with section 39 of the Biosecurity Act 1993.

The exporter PICA must make the export declaration in NAIT:

• at the port of export, and
• before the animal leaves New Zealand.

The declaration must contain:

• the NAIT number at the port of export
• the fact the animal is exported live
• the RFID number of the NAIT device fitted to the animal
• the country to which the animal is being exported
• the date on which the animal is exported.
