Spring time bounce back for West Coast birds

Date 25 September 2017

OSPRI has wrapped up a number of TBfree pest control operations over winter including the Southern Paparoa aerial 1080 operation, ground control around Barrytown and Coal Creek, and the Grey Valley West ground control.

OSPRI+DOC's Battle for our Birds operations at Paparoa North (from Punakaiki north up towards Charleston) and the Roaring Meg (block with Paparoa Wildlife Trust cover other important areas of habitat.

Species that will benefit from predator control include roroa (great spotted kiwi); whio (blue duck) and taiko (westland petrel), south of Punakaiki, the only breeding site in the world.

So far OSPRI’s TBfree programme has eradicated TB from 1.83 million hectares – with 7.9m hectares of Vector Risk Area left to be eradicated.
