OSPRI's hunting consultation explained

Date 29 September 2017

Ahead of the national Sika Show in Taupo, the regional newspaper Taupo Times has published an editorial article by GM Programme Design Stu Hutchings about OSPRI’s consultation with communities affected by possum control operations.

Open and transparent notification of upcoming aerial and ground management enables interested groups – including the deerstalkers attending the Sika Show this weekend – an opportunity to offer submissions on operations in terrain and habitat that is important to hunters.

The company’s listening stance was highlighted during consultation with hunters about central North Island operations, and ongoing contact with representative bodies such as the Game Animal Council and the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association. Concerns over access to hunting country during popular periods like ‘the roar’ were communicated to OSPRI operation extension officers and management, and solutions agreed included changing the shape and timing of some operations.
